Fox News reported that one person was killed and 19 others were struck by a speeding vehicle that jumped the curb and plowed into a crowd in New York’s Times Square on Thursday afternoon.
A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody in this incident. Some sources told Fox News that it appeared to be an accident. Not yet confirmed. Several buildings in the area are on lockdown due to this incident.
Allegedly, the 26-year-old driver, a Bronx man, made a wrong turn, drove in the wrong direction for three blocks, striking multiple pedestrians until crashing at West 45th Street, according to law enforcement sources. After crashing, he attempted to flee on foot but was detained, sources said. He allegedly punched a police officer as they took him into custody, sources said.
The driver has two prior arrests for driving while intoxicated as well as other motor vehicle violations, sources said.
